In September 2016, I sustained a season-ending injury that sent me back home from Oklahoma City to Riverside, CA for physical therapy. While at Dr. Olson’s office, I was introduced to another patient, Nan-C Hilpert, who was enduring rehab for her shoulders after a long stint of chemotherapy. She was constantly giving our therapist, Gregg, a hard time and knew exactly how to press his buttons. I quickly jumped in, and Nan-C and I became good friends. Over the next three months, we got to know one another pretty well and shared stories about life, baseball, and relationships.
After a few weeks, Nan-C mentioned that she knew a girl that I had to meet. She kept going on and on about how amazing she was: she was beautiful, played volleyball at Westmont, lived in Riverside, and loved the Lord and her family. Nan-C talked about how she was loving and sweet, compassionate and humble. She talked about how important it was to the girl’s parents that their children were grounded in love and living for Jesus. She kept saying how good we would be for each other, and how rare it is to find those qualities in a young person.
Needless to say, I was sold!
There was only one problem: this girl was in another relationship at the time, and there was no way I was going to try to steal her away from someone else. While I was a little disheartened at the news, I told Nan-C to let me know when she was single.
Nearly five months after our conversation, I was resting up before one of my games in Oklahoma City when I received a text from Nan-C. Staying true to her word, she told me that this girl—Kami—was finally single! After all that Nan-C had told me about her, I realized that Kami wasn’t the kind of girl who would hand out her number to just anyone; I had to think of a special way to get it from her.
I decided to make a bet with Nan-C, asking her to relay a message to Kami: If we won our game that next day, Nan-C would agree to give me Kami’s number; if we lost, I would have to continue to suffer without it.

One day, I received a phone call from my life-long family friend, Nan-C. She explained that she got herself into some trouble and wanted to know if I wouldn’t mind if she gave my number to this guy she had met in physical therapy—Trevor. She told me about how she met him when he was recovering from a baseball injury and about how he was one-of-a-kind—unlike anyone she had met before. She told me he had a relationship with Jesus, and that she thought he and I would really hit it off.
Nan-C explained that in order to get her to give him my number, Trevor had made a bet: If he won his game that night, I would have to give him my number; if he lost, I wouldn’t have to do anything.
While I told her I wasn’t looking to date anyone, he sounded like he was really special. She persisted, and, after hearing her rave on about him even more, I agreed to the bet.
A few hours later, I found out that he ended up losing his game. I was disappointed, but thought maybe it just wasn’t meant to be.

After our long game, I came into the clubhouse and looked at my phone. Nan-C had texted me, saying she was worried that Kami and I might never meet.
I knew I had to come up with a way to talk to her, so, thinking quickly, I asked Nan-C if I could change the terms of our bet: instead of going without Kami’s number, I asked for Kami’s address so that I could send her a letter. Nan-C loved the idea and told me I had to do it!
While I felt a little nervous and awkward about writing a letter to someone I had never met, I knew it was worth a try! What was the worst that could happen?
Over the next couple of days, I wrote a few rough drafts of the letter and sent them to my sister, Tifani, wondering if I should even do something this crazy. She reassured me, gave me some confidence, and told me to send it.
I dropped the letter in the mail on one of our road trips to El Paso and waited.

To my surprise, I received a letter in the mail a couple weeks after my conversation with Nan-C from Trevor. Nan-C had given Trevor my address instead!
The letter was so sweet and thoughtful! I could tell that he had put a lot of time into it, and that he really cared about getting to know me. He told me a few things about himself and asked me some great questions.
After reading it, I remember thinking, What kind of man is willing to write a letter to a girl he has never even met before?!
Right after I read the letter, I called Nan-C and told her to give him my number. He texted me that same day, and we started talking regularly.
We had our first date on July 12, 2017, and we haven’t looked back since. Ten months later, on May 20, 2018, Trevor proposed, asking me to be his wife—and I couldn’t have been more excited to say yes!
